Excellence Scholarships

‘Excellence Scholarships will attract the very best students to Birmingham’

Excellence Scholarships will attract the brightest students to Birmingham to study STEM subjects: Mathematics, Engineering and the Sciences; subjects for which Birmingham is renowned.

The need

Most of our competitors offer Excellence Scholarships of £1,000 per annum and it is likely any increase will be to £3,000 per annum, in line with tuition fee costs. To leap ahead of the game we offer £5,000 a year to the cream of undergraduates, creating a system for Birmingham akin to Oxford University’s world-renowned Rhodes Scholarships.

The solution

Birmingham has traditionally been extremely strong in these challenging subjects and is therefore very well placed to attract the very best undergraduates to these areas. With the advent of the new fee structure in the UK, research shows that talent-based scholarships attract the best students to these subjects.

The result

  • Increased numbers of the best undergraduate students studying STEM subjects with Birmingham’s leading academics.
  • A stream of excellence in STEM subjects which results in increased numbers of students studying at postgraduate and postdoctoral level.

How you can help

By supporting Excellence Scholarships, you will be supporting the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Each Excellence Scholarship for a four-year duration costs £20,000.

The University is keen to reciprocate scholarship gifts and there are naming opportunities linked to scholarships.

Match funding means that for every £3 donated to the University, the government will donate £1 until 2011; for further information contact Phil Addy, tel: +44 (0)121 414 8641.
