| Access to Birmingham (A2B) Scholarships
“Receiving this scholarship has allowed me to become the first in my family to go to university. The generosity of alumni means that my life at university has been greatly enhanced, for which I extend my deepest thanks.” Sarah Stanwell, Access to Birmingham Scholar
The University believes that access to Higher Education should be based on academic, not financial, ability. A2B helps to ensure the most able and determined students can benefit from a university education, regardless of their personal or financial circumstances.
Access to Birmingham Scholarships are offered to students who achieve the prospectus offer for grades and are rewarded for achieving excellent academic standards.
The need
Each A2B Scholarship makes the difference between its recipient being able to progress onto university and develop their full potential and them missing out on that opportunity.
Without the scheme, these young people might not even consider the possibility of higher education and would certainly not be able to meet the financial demands of that progression.
The solution
The Access to Birmingham (A2B) scheme encourages and supports applications from able individuals who have encountered disadvantage, whether socio-economic, educational or personal.
Eligible students receive a reduced entry offer of up to two grades at A Level or the equivalent, if they successfully complete the University’s Higher Education Learning Module. This consists of three elements designed to help students make the transition to university work – an online writing skills module, a student shadow day and an academic assignment related to the chosen course. Those students who go on to achieve the prospectus offer for grades, are offered an A2B scholarship.
The A2B scheme was created in 2000 and has since gone from strength to strength, with increasing numbers both of applicants and successful scholarship students.
The result - Aspirations are raised and academically able students are offered the chance of a University education.
- Philanthropy ensures that students are given the financial support to enable their study at the University of Birmingham.
- More than 150 students have already benefitted from Access to Birmingham Scholarships.
