Special Collections – The Cadbury Research Library

Completed project

“The new Special Collections facility has only been made possible thanks to the generous gifts of our donors and we are extremely grateful for their continuing support.’ Sue Worrall, Head of Special Collections and Project Champion

The University’s Special Collections and Archives have been built up over 120 years and include irreplaceable items such as rare first editions and historical papers.

A dedicated, purpose-built facility has been created in the redeveloped Muirhead Tower, consolidating the collections and creating exhibition, storage and learning spaces. Funding for this project is complete.

What’s the impact?

  • Historically important and irreplaceable collections preserved for future generations.
  • Improved facilities allow for the collections to be used and studied.
  • Better conservation of often fragile items.
  • The collections can grow and develop, ensuring their continued value to academics, students and all interested parties.

Why Birmingham and why now?

Priceless and unique materials within the collections include the Mingana Collection of illuminated Middle Eastern manuscripts, the Noel Coward Collection, extensive papers relating to the Chamberlain family, and medieval manuscripts from as far back as the 13th century. The Collections attract a whole range of people, including scholars and students from around the world.

What is the need?

The collections are currently housed across a number of sites, presenting access issues and reducing awareness about them.

Current conditions are also inadequate for the collections’ care and conservation, and space constraints limit their growth. In addition to better facilities for consulting the collections, the project will also allow the University to greatly improve conditions for its conservation work.
