Your memories - 1960s
James Hawksley (then known as Jim) (BSc Chemical Engineering, 1960; MSc Chemical Engineering, 1961; PhD Chemical Engineering, 1963)
Sorting through some old photos recently I came across this picture (right). Whilst the quality of the picture (of a TV screen) is not good I am sure those associated with the event will remember it!
The picture shows an interview some time in the year 1962/63 with four postgrads in the pilot plant lab of the Chemical Engineering Department; from left to right Mike Bowen, Terry Wharton, myself, and Richie Vose.
The interview was part of a current affairs programme and the topic under discussion was the then topical issue of the emigration of research students following completion of their PhDs, the so-called 'brain drain'. The interviewer was one Michael Heseltine (note the hair!) who I seem to remember was at the time an investigative reporter/presenter.
Of the four of us I was the only one to remain in the UK, the others did go to the US but I have no idea whether they all remained there or where they are now.
